The Rolex Datejust is one of the brand’s most recognisable models, and certain dial variations have become especially well known over time. One of the most popular is the Wimbledon dial, seen here on a Rolex Datejust reference 116333, originally sold on 25 May 2013.
This watch is finished in yellow Rolesor, combining stainless steel with an 18k yellow gold fluted bezel, and is fitted to an Oyster bracelet. While the Jubilee bracelet is often associated with this dial, the Oyster gives the watch a cleaner, less busy look and works particularly well as an everyday Rolex.
The Wimbledon dial
The Wimbledon dial first appeared in the mid-2000s and is defined by its slate grey dial with green Roman numerals. The nickname comes from Rolex’s long-standing relationship with the Wimbledon tennis championships, a partnership that began in 1978. Although never officially named by Rolex, the dial has become universally known as the Wimbledon.
Rolex in 2013
When this watch was originally sold in 2013, the Rolex market looked very different to today. Steel sports models were readily available, waiting lists were short, and buyers chose watches for their design and longevity rather than hype. The Datejust 116333 offered a modern 41mm case, dependable engineering, and timeless styling.
