What To Do If Your Rolex Is Lost or Stolen in the UK

What To Do If Your Rolex Is Lost or Stolen in the UK

If your Rolex is lost or stolen, acting quickly and methodically is essential. The steps below will help protect you with insurers and greatly reduce the chances of the watch being resold.

1. Contact the police immediately

Report the theft to the police as soon as possible. You will be issued with a crime reference number, which is essential for insurance purposes and for notifying Rolex and industry databases. Be ready to provide the model, reference number and, if known, the serial number.

2. Notify Rolex

Once you have a crime reference number, contact Rolex directly or via an authorised dealer and ask for the watch to be flagged as stolen. Rolex will not recover the watch for you, but flagging it means it may be identified if it ever returns to the authorised network.

3. Register the watch as stolen

With the crime reference number in hand, contact The Watch Register (formerly the Lost Watch Register) and have the watch added to their database. This is widely checked by UK dealers, auction houses and insurers, and is one of the most important steps you can take.

4. Gather proof of ownership

At home, gather anything that proves ownership of the watch. This may include original box and papers, purchase receipts or invoices, emails, photographs, valuations, and any service history, service receipts or service invoices. Having this ready will make the insurance process far smoother.

5. Notify your insurance company

Contact your insurer and provide the crime reference number along with all supporting documentation. Clear records usually result in a quicker and less stressful claim.

6. Raise awareness carefully

Some owners also choose to post details of the stolen watch in large UK Facebook groups focused on buying and selling Rolex watches. While this should never replace official reporting, it can help raise awareness within the trade if done sensibly and without sharing personal information.

7. How do I check if a Rolex watch is stolen?

Firstly, where are you buying the watch from? If you are purchasing from a reputable dealer, they should have already carried out the necessary due diligence for you. This should include checking the watch against stolen and lost watch databases, being comfortable with the person they are buying the watch from, requesting proof of purchase, and checking whether the watch still has its original box and papers.

If the original paperwork is missing, they should be asking further questions about the watch’s history and provenance. A reputable dealer should also obtain official photographic ID from the seller and only make payment to a bank account in that person’s name.

As a general rule, if someone will only accept cash, alarm bells should start ringing.

9. Can Rolex track a stolen watch?

In a way, yes. Once you have reported the serial number to Rolex as lost or stolen, it can be added to their internal records. If the watch is later taken into a Rolex boutique or service centre, the watch may be retained while ownership and the theft status are investigated.

If you have already received a payout from your insurance company, the watch legally becomes the property of the insurer, so it would normally be returned to them. If the watch was not insured, then once ownership has been confirmed, the watch would usually be returned to you.

A similar process applies with dealers and shops that use stolen watch databases such as The Watch Register. If a watch is flagged as lost or stolen, dealers are generally advised to retain the watch and contact the police. However, in reality this is not always straightforward, as many serial number checks are carried out after the seller has already left the premises.

9. What happens if someone unknowingly buys a stolen Rolex?

If you follow the steps and guidance above, you will drastically reduce the chances of unknowingly buying a stolen watch. However, as with anything, there is always a possibility that something can slip through the net. The important thing is to protect yourself as much as possible and ensure you have carried out sensible checks before purchasing.

If you do discover that a watch you own has been reported as stolen, the first thing you should do is contact the person or company you purchased it from. In many cases, they may have carried out all the appropriate checks themselves and simply had no idea there was an issue. We have personally experienced this before when a watch offered to us flagged as stolen. The owner was genuinely shocked and had no knowledge of the problem. In the end, the watch had to be returned to the dealer he originally bought it from, who then refunded him.

If the seller is unwilling to help or is refusing to cooperate, you may need to involve the police. Ideally, the watch is then traced back through the chain of ownership to establish where the problem originated. Realistically though, this process can usually only go back so far, particularly if private sales or cash transactions are involved.
