Yesterday we sold a Rolex Explorer 16570 at our Tunbridge Wells store. It was a 2009 full set with the white Polar dial, unpolished and in exceptional condition. The buyer drove down from west London after seeing the photos, and once he tried it on it was clear why the 5-digit 40mm still works so well.
The case and bracelet proportions on the 16570 are a big part of the appeal. At 40mm the watch sits substantial on the wrist without feeling oversized, and the lug shape and bracelet give it balanced, purposeful lines. For many collectors the 5-digit design simply wears better than later, bulkier models. It is understated, durable and unmistakably Rolex.
We also talked about the movement. Early 16570s use calibre 3185, but later production examples were upgraded to calibre 3186. The 3186 uses Rolex’s Parachrom hairspring which improves resistance to magnetic fields, increases shock protection and gives better temperature stability. Practically that means later 16570s are a little tougher and show less of the small GMT hand “wiggle” some owners notice on older movements. It is an evolutionary upgrade, not a different watch, but it is worth calling out on listings and valuations.
Condition and paperwork made this sale straightforward. Full set examples are always easier to place, box and papers prove provenance and they help with resale. This one being unpolished kept the factory lines crisp, and collectors notice that. Light surface wear is acceptable, heavy polishing erases the character that makes a late-run Rolex special.
The buyer left happy, actually very happy.
